Scott Moe Announces Policy on International Trade and Exports

WEYBURN, SK – Scott Moe announced his first leadership campaign policy on growing and diversifying Saskatchewan’s trade and export presence around the world. The announcement was made at Souris Valley Industries, a Weyburn based pre-cast cement company that services many of Saskatchewan’s key industries including agriculture, energy, and manufacturing. Souris Valley Industries is also currently looking to the United States as a key market to expand their business presence.

“Saskatchewan’s exports feed and fuel countries around the world,” said Moe. “Now is the time to invest in strategic efforts to grow and diversify export markets for Saskatchewan companies and producers. This will create new private sector jobs while expanding the revenue streams that fund public services that the people of Saskatchewan rely on.”

The first step of this policy would see the establishment of a Ministry of International Trade and Exports, which would replace the Ministry of Economy.

“The new Minister responsible for International Trade and Exports will be mandated with establishing Saskatchewan’s presence in the countries that account for the largest share of Saskatchewan exports, while maintaining Saskatchewan’s relationships with neighbouring jurisdictions in the United States,” said Moe.

The announcement also lays the foundation for establishing a Premier’s Council on International Trade and Exports, a group of external stakeholders representing Saskatchewan’s diverse sectors that will advise the Premier and Minister responsible for International Trade and Exports. The Council would provide input on a strategic trade missions plan that will map out how Saskatchewan’s government can develop and grow relationships that are crucial for increasing our private sector’s international exports.

Implementation of the new policy on international trade and exports will begin immediately after the Saskatchewan Party leadership race.
